GRID members agreed on the following positioning after FINA’s decision to review the ban on caps for Ethnic Diverse Communites:
“As the SIGA committee on Gender, Race, Inclusion and Diversity (GRID) we welcome the move by FINA to review their decision on ‘SoulCap’ swim hats and other similar swimwear products for athlete’s use during the Olympics and all elite competitions.
We believe that sport should be accessible to all and therefore it is essential that policies reflect the needs of participants at both the elite and grassroots level.
Swim caps designed for all hairstyles that are part of Black culture are an important factor in breaking down barriers to Black people taking part in swimming and other water sports; therefore we would strongly urge FINA to consider the impact of this decision, especially given that swimming is not only a sport but also a vital life skill.”
